How To Choose The Best Living Room Rug

The right rug can give your room the exact look that you had envisioned for your living room, while the wrong one can totally spoil the look. To choose a rug, there are a few things that should be kept in mind – color, size, texture depending on the space where you want to keep it. However, do not undermine your own instincts while choosing the right rug. Also, consider how often the rug would need cleaning.

How To Choose The Best Living Room Rug
Based on these aspects, here are a few tips for you before you go rug-hunting.

Choose rugs according to the size of your living room
Ideally, all your furniture is placed on the rug in your living room. For a square room, a square or circle rug is good. Similarly, for a rectangular room, choose a rectangle rug. An area rug should be minimum of 6 inches and no more than 2 feet away from the wall.

Bright or muted – choose the right color
Depending on the furniture you have and the vibe you want to create, choose the color of the rug. If you already have furniture, then buy vibrant colored rugs to accentuate warm wall colors and wooden furniture. If your furniture has slight patterns, then opt for muted or neutral tones in your rugs . This will create a tranquil setting. Don’t overlook patterns. Depending on the colors of your furniture, choose a pattern that has those tones and similar colors.

Get the right texture and know how to clean it
You would definitely want your rug to last for some years, which is why it is necessary to take proper care of it. Depending on how often you can do that, select a texture that works best for you. For example, rugs with pile are difficult to clean. Flatweave and low piles are ideal for a living room that has a minimal and modern decor. For a look of decadence, choose a high pile and soft rugs.

Dare to layer
Make your living room a bit more interesting by layering your rugs. For example, a plain jute rug beneath a patterned one will give your living room two different shades of color. If your room is long and narrow, you can place two complementing rugs side by side.

Have a budget in mind
This is another important aspect. The living room rug should look really nice, be easy to clean and be comfortable as well. Keeping these factors in mind, you would probably want to buy the best available in your budget. But also have the answers for these points in mind –

  • Are you planning to change the rug next season?
  • Do you want to buy a timeless classic that will stay for years?
  • Are you planning to move to some other city soon?
