7 Tips for Traveling with Food Allergies

When you have food allergies, you won’t be able to experiment much with your daily meals, when you travel to new countries. Since staying healthy is extremely important during travel, follow the mentioned tips and be safe.

  • Before traveling, discuss your plans with your family physician. If you need any travel health vaccinations, your doctor will intimate you about the same.
  • Before you check in at the hotel, call them up and ask them if they can customize meals for you.
7 Tips for Traveling with Food Allergies
If possible, get a room with a refrigerator and microwave so that you can make your own meals. High-end hotels have great services where the chef comes to talk to you and know about your requirements before preparing a meal, but all hotels might not be that accommodating.
  • Carry a medical kit, with anti-allergic or specific medicines that you might need in case there is an allergy attack. Also, carry anti-bacterial wipes with you and clean your hands and plates before a meal. Have an emergency plan ready and talk about it with your family as well. Keep the numbers of nearest hospitals.
  • During travel, health should be your topmost priority. As such, it is advisable to avoid places that specifically serve seafood.
  • Another travel health tip is to always carry your allergy card. Even if you do not know the local language, take help of translating apps. Ask the waiter to show your card to the chef.
  • If you are traveling in a group or with friends, make them aware of your condition so that they can get help, if required. Also, never sample food from their plates unless you know for sure there is nothing in it that might affect your health.
  • Join The International Association for Medical Assistance to Travelers (IAMT). They have a list of English speaking doctors in foreign locations. They also have charts that will help you determine the sanitary conditions of water, milk, and food at the place where you are staying.
  • Food allergies shouldn’t come in the way of your travel, but you also need to be aware of the consequences and be ready to face them in any situation. Follow the travel health tips and explore the world!
